Mission Statement
Illinois/Midwest NF, Inc. is an organization
dedicated to the support and education of people
affected by the Neurofibromatoses, to the education
of health care providers, and to the investment in
research.
What Is NF?
Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder of the
nervous system that causes tumors to form on the
nerves anywhere in the body at any time. NF is a
progressive disorder that affects all races and both
sexes equally.

Neurofibromatosis is the most common neurological genetic condition, affecting
more people than Muscular Dystrophy, Tay-Sachs, and Huntington's disease
combined. Half of individuals affected by NF inherit itfrom their parents. The other half
acquire NF by spontaneous mutation. Unpredictable, NF can affect each patient
differently.

Some effects of this disorder include: tumor growth, cancer, learning disabilities,
bone deformities, disfigurement, hearing loss, epilepsy, and vision impairment.
